最易出錯(cuò)的英語標(biāo)點(diǎn)符號(hào)
在看過我們的客戶提交上來的個(gè)人陳述和推薦信的初稿后，留學(xué)快遞工作室的美國編輯們發(fā)現(xiàn)很多中國學(xué)生的文法錯(cuò)誤是相同的。編輯們強(qiáng)烈要求在工作室的網(wǎng)站上發(fā)一篇專門糾正中國學(xué)生易犯的標(biāo)點(diǎn)符號(hào)錯(cuò)誤的文章。
兩個(gè)結(jié)構(gòu)完整的英語句子一定要用連詞或分號(hào)連接
這些都是編輯們在學(xué)生的稿件中發(fā)現(xiàn)的錯(cuò)句：
Your paper is very impressive, it inspires me a lot.
I am interested in your research, it matches my experience.
This teacher taught me to transform my paralyzing fears into a determined drive for success, my life then changed.
把以上三個(gè)句子翻譯成中文，標(biāo)點(diǎn)符合是沒有問題的；然而與漢語不同的是，英語中的逗號(hào)沒有連接兩個(gè)分句的作用。在這種情況下，我們要么把逗號(hào)改成分號(hào)，要么使用相應(yīng)的連詞表示其邏輯關(guān)系。這三個(gè)句子可以分別更正為：
Your paper is very impressive;it inspires me a lot./ Your paper is very impressive， and it inspires me a lot.
I am interested in your research;it matches my experience./ I am interested in your research, because it matches my experience.
This teacher taught me to transform my paralyzing fears into adetermined drive for success; my life then changed. / This teachertaught me to transform my paralyzing fears into a determined drive forsuccess, so my life then changed.
并列成分中最后一項(xiàng)之前的逗號(hào)不能省略
下面是標(biāo)點(diǎn)符號(hào)出了小錯(cuò)誤的句子：
In middle school I grappled with chronic mental downside, a physical manifestation of the fear, guilt and anxiety.
I love charcoal drawings, oil paintings and black-and-white photography.
在列舉幾個(gè)并列成分時(shí)，我們通常會(huì)用and來連接最后一個(gè)部分，而中國學(xué)生極容易忽略在and之前加一個(gè)逗號(hào)。上面兩句應(yīng)該做這樣的改動(dòng)：
In middle school I grappled with chronic mental downside, a physical manifestation of the fear, guilt, and anxiety.
I love charcoal drawings, oil paintings, and black-and-white photography.
不同符號(hào)在引號(hào)里或引號(hào)外的位置不同
美式英語中引語的符號(hào)與中文有較大的不同。看以下幾個(gè)句子：
錯(cuò)：He said: "Never again will we fail."
表示“某人說”后面的冒號(hào)應(yīng)改為逗號(hào)。應(yīng)改為：
He said, "Never again will we fail."
錯(cuò)： "Never again will we fail." he said.
如果引語在前面，“某人說”在句后，應(yīng)在引語的引號(hào)內(nèi)用逗號(hào)終結(jié)引語。應(yīng)改為：
"Never again will we fail," he said.
錯(cuò)： He said, "Never again will we fail;” we nonetheless give a try.
錯(cuò)： He said, "Never again will we go so far:” those very words.
冒號(hào)和分號(hào)一律放在引號(hào)以外。應(yīng)改為：
He said, "Never again will we fail"; we nonetheless give a try.
He said, "Never again will we go so far": those very words.
在你的留學(xué)文書或套磁信中，當(dāng)提到教授論文或著作中的某一句時(shí)，需要標(biāo)上頁碼數(shù)，頁碼的雙括號(hào)應(yīng)標(biāo)在引號(hào)之后、句末符號(hào)之前。如下：
"...government of the people, by the people, and for the people, shall not perish..." (p.76).
Americans fought bitterly so that "government of the people, by thepeople, and for the people, shall not perish" (p.76); yet seldom....
留學(xué)申請資料是非常正式的文書，標(biāo)點(diǎn)符號(hào)馬虎不得。英文中有句話是 “Any writer can get better when it comes to punctuation.”標(biāo)點(diǎn)符號(hào)是容易忽略的角落，也是很能鑒別英文書寫能力高低的細(xì)節(jié)！
